PERU CAPTURES MAOIST SHINING PATH LEADER

Wall Street Journal on February 12, 2012, reported that Peru captured alive the leader of a remnant group of the Shining Path, a Maoist-inspired insurgency that waged a bloody war against the state in the 1980s and 1990s, President Ollanta Humala said on the 12th. Excerpts below:

Mr. Humala said that Florindo Flores, alias “Artemio,” was captured during a joint operation by Peru’s police and military, providing a major blow to the Shining Path in Peru’s Upper Huallaga Valley.

Mr. Flores was badly wounded during a confrontation with Peru’s security forces, Mr. Humala said.
